Definition of Occupation:
Many jobs opportunities exist in the business world at the middle-management or first line supervisors or those requiring management skills, attitudes and knowledge. A broad foundation in general management helps one to manage a team or business in the retail, wholesale or commercial world.
Human Resources (H.R.) professionals deal with compensation, recruiting, hiring, firing, outplacement, benefits (health care, retirement plans etc.) and personnel policies. Some human resources positions will focus on one area, while others called “generalists” work with all aspects of H.R.
Small Business: An entrepreneur is someone who organizes a business undertaking, and is comfortable assuming risk in the beginning for long term gain. Entrepreneurs believe in themselves and their ideas, enjoy the thrill of new ventures, and aren’t generally interested in other people.
International Business: International businesses conduct business in two or more countries. People who work in this field may travel extensively or may work locally exclusively. Many people looking to work in International Business know more than one language, although for some companies this is not required.
Marketing: This field in the area of business involves the study of consumer needs and desires for products and services, their willingness and ability to pay for these needs/desires and the geographical vicinity in which these consumers reside. In addition, it is a study of the various strategies used to attract and motivate people to buy or subscribe to a product or service along with exposure to the numerous methods of distribution. Specializations in this area include sales, advertising, sales promotion, retail, brand management and marketing research.

Management:
- Interview, hire, supervise, train, evaluate and/or schedule workers in the business.
- Conduct studies of problems concerning organization, communication, information flow, inventory control and cost control.
- Analyze data and prepare reports.
- A small business owner would be responsible for all financial, marketing and personnel activity.
Human Resources:
- Handling paperwork for benefits and new hires.
- Answering questions about benefits and personnel policies.
- Reviewing resumes and interviewing applicants.
- Making sure employees are paid the correct amount and on time.
- Dealing with employee complaints and resolving employee conflicts.
Small Business:
- A small business owner would be responsible for all financial, marketing and personnel activity.
- Interview, hire, supervise, train, evaluate and/or schedule workers in the business.

- Analyze data, and prepare reports.
International Business:
- Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders insure that all documentation of shipments into and out of the US meet the requirement of the US and other countries.
- They expedite international shipments.
Marketing:
- Plan and administer budgets
- Sell products and services
- Manage and direct people and plan work tasks
- Hire, supervise, and negotiate staff policies and disputes
- Handle Customer Relations
Levels of Education:

Associate:
Associate of Applied Science Degree in Management
Students who pursue the Associate of Applied Science degree in Management will choose a specialization in one of the following: General Business, Human Resources, Marketing, International Business, or Small Business.

- International Business: Customs Brokers, Freight Forwarders, Operations Agents
- Marketing: The industries which employ the largest number of market research analysts are management, scientific, and technical consulting firms, insurance carriers, computer systems design and related firms, software publishers, securities and commodities brokers, and advertising and related firms.
Workplace Skills:
To be in management one must like coordinating people and/or activities, instruct, train and meet with groups of people. One also needs to be able to identify the nature of problems, gather essential information and generate aproaches to solve the problem. Time management, management of personnel and materials is important.
In Human Resources one must have good communication, listening skills and diagnosis skills for referral to other resources. Planning and scheduling skills would be necessary for empoyee event planning.
Individuals interested in Marketing must be mature and motivated, work well under stress, and have good communication skills. They should be able to listen and work well with people. They should also have good organizational and analytical skills.
Individuals interested in Small Business would need people management skills as well as general financial administration skills for running a businesss.
Individuals interested in International Business shoul have good people skills, the ability to work with others from different cultures and countries, speak a second language, time management and attention to detail is important..

International Business work in a fast-paced environment and with others from different cultures and countries. The ability to speak a second language is important. Many jobs are located near airports and Port of Houston.
Marketing: Market and survey researchers generally have structured work schedules. Some often work alone, writing reports, preparing statistical charts, and using computers, but they also may be an integral part of a research team. Market researchers who conduct personal interviews will have frequent contact with the public. Most work under pressure of deadlines and tight schedules, which may require overtime. Their routine may be interrupted by special requests for data, as well as by the need to attend meetings or conferences. Travel may be necessary.

Earnings:
Earnings can vary depending on the industry and the area.
The median income for first-line supervisors/ managers in the state of Texas is $37,700 annually (2002).
Human Resources: Median annual hourly wage of administrative workers that are payroll clerks is $12.90 an hour in 2002 according America's Career InfoNet (www.acinet.org) published by the Federal Government.
Small Business: Obviously, compensation varies widely. In the beginning, entrepreneurs usually either take out loans or get some other sort of financial backing for the start up costs. Depending on their business, it may be months or even years before they make a profit.
International Business: This occupation field would pay similar to jobs in general business management .
Marketing: earnings vary widely with geographic location, education level, and experience. However, beginning income with a 2 year degree in this area will range from $18,500 to $25,000.
